AGS Releases Updated Draft to the Beers Criteria

The American Geriatrics Society (AGS) has released for public comment draft recommendations for updates to the Beers Criteria for Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use in Older Adults. Additionally, a companion piece is set to be released by the AGS on the best way for patients, providers, and health systems to use (or not use) the criteria. Comments to the AGS on the updates to the Beers Criteria were due by May 5, 2015.

Keeping Up with Quality Metric Changes

  • As the Pharmacy Quality Alliance (PQA) has selectively implemented portions of the Beers Criteria in its translation process to CMS-measured quality measures, it does so in coordination with the National Committee on Quality Assurance (NCQA). These 2 organizations have considered AGS recommendations and revisions to the Beers Criteria when updating these performance measures, and the 2 measures are jointly maintained
  • The updated AGS list potentially represents yet another fundamental change in the Star Rating measurement process, which will impact high-risk medication identification systems and outreach modalities as well as educational tools and programs.

What Does This Mean for You?

Although still in draft form, there are several potentially significant changes to the medication list that will require additional refinement of ”use criteria” as well as the addition of drug-drug interactions and dose modification due to renal impairment. Communication, education, and overall readiness will be essential in making sure that these changes are incorporated as seamlessly as possible. How prepared are you to provide pull-through strategies?
